1. Product Quality Issues

1) Unreasonable ash content in electrode paste is a key factor. Excessively high ash content slows down sintering and accelerates consumption; too low ash content results in insufficient baking strength, increasing the risk of hard breaks. Proper control of ash content helps balance sintering and consumption rates.

2) Low fixed carbon content leads to rapid electrode consumption. Fixed carbon directly affects the electrical conductivity and thermal stability of electrode paste. Higher fixed carbon content increases the proportion of carbon materials, reduces the amount of carbon involved in chemical reactions, and thus lowers consumption rate. Conversely, low fixed carbon accelerates oxidation and consumption.

2. Improper Operating Procedures

1) Inappropriate pressing and lowering operations: excessive lowering length or short intervals between operations lead to under-baking, accelerating consumption. Frequent adjustments or excessively high current may cause paste leakage or soft breakage.

2) Improper electrode depth control: excessive fluctuations in feeding depth disrupt thermal balance, reducing baking quality. If both working length and furnace insertion depth are too short, electrode consumption increases rapidly.

3) Overloading of the electric furnace causes accelerated electrode wear. High-current baking intensifies electrode consumption. Under high-current conditions, oxidizing gases such as oxygen and carbon dioxide from the furnace atmosphere penetrate through electrode gaps, react with the electrode surface, and accelerate consumption.

4) High secondary voltage with low current also increases electrode consumption. Elevated secondary voltage alters arc length, potentially accelerating surface oxidation of the paste. In high-voltage environments, higher arc temperatures accelerate decomposition of organic components in the paste, increasing consumption.

5) Rising furnace bottom reduces electrode insertion depth, leading to faster consumption. This is easy to understand—shallow electrode insertion increases exposed arc phenomena, raises oxidation and temperature, and naturally increases consumption.

3. Equipment and Maintenance Factors

1) Design flaws in electrode sleeves: mismatch between sleeve inner diameter and paste column height creates pressure imbalance, causing stratification or sleeve expansion.

2) Incorrect paste-feeding methods: adding too much paste at once exceeds the electrode’s weight limit, resulting in paste leakage or sleeve slippage.
