Key Factors for Optimizing Electrode Paste Formulation

As is well known, the quality of electrode paste is primarily determined by the quality of raw materials. A scientific electrode paste formulation requires a comprehensive consideration of the following factors:


1. Aggregate System:

Types: Selection and combination of electrically calcined anthracite (high mechanical strength), petroleum coke (good electrical conductivity), graphite powder (improves electrical conductivity), etc.

Particle Size Distribution: The precise ratio of coarse particles (skeletal structure), medium particles (filler), and fine powder (increases bulk density and promotes sintering) is crucial for ensuring strength and permeability.


2. Binder System:

Type and Dosage: The softening point, coking value, and other indicators of medium-temperature coal tar pitch or modified pitch must match the aggregate. The dosage must ensure sufficient plasticity and binding force in the paste, while also forming a robust coke mesh after coking.


3. Process Adaptability Adjustment:

**Furnace-Specific:** Different furnace types (open, semi-enclosed, closed), different products (ferrosilicon, calcium carbide, industrial silicon), and different power levels of submerged arc furnaces result in varying furnace inlet temperatures, current densities, and electrode consumption rates, necessitating corresponding adjustments to the formulation.

**Material-Specific:** Fine-tuning is performed based on the raw materials used (e.g., ore purity) and operational habits.

Electrode paste formulation is far more than a simple mixing of raw materials; it integrates complex technologies from carbon materials science, heat transfer, electrochemistry, and smelting processes. It serves as a bridge connecting electrode paste manufacturing and submerged arc furnace smelting. An optimized and stable formulation is fundamental to ensuring stable electrode sintering, reliable strength, good conductivity, and reasonable consumption, providing the underlying guarantee for safe, efficient, low-consumption, and long-cycle operation of the submerged arc furnace.
